Functional problems following esophageal surgery.Papasavas P Temple University School of Medicine at the Western Pennsylvania Hospital Clinical Campus, 4800 Friendship Avenue, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15224, USA. ppapasav@wpahs.org Functional problems following esophageal surgery for GERD are not infrequent. The majority of patients improve with time. Careful patient selection and attention to surgical technique are key factors in preventing such functional disorders. When anatomic abnormalities related to the fundoplication are identified, reoperation may offer symptom relief. Before embarking on re-fundoplication, a thorough preoperative evaluation of the esophageal physiology is recommended. Published 1 June 2005 in Surg Clin North Am, 85(3): 525-38.
